Melanie’s Professional Story
Tekst
Melanie started out as a (unhealthy) biohacker early on in her teens. With an athletic background in dancing and sports, she quickly jumped on the health train to understand and experiment with her body, unfortunately very often also in too extreme, self-destructive ways. Her rest also consisted quite often of experimentation with food, self-care and creative movement practices. These foundational building blocks together with her creative scientific mind-set led her to study Nutrition at Technical University of Munich with a focus on research. During her time in Munich, her dedication for movement and biohacking continued which led her to become a fitness instructor in body styling and body pump as a side hustle to her Bachelors.
The disconnect between health and the healthcare system (what could also be called the “illness system”) became very apparent to her throughout her college years. Health disconnecting mind from body versus providing a more integrative, holistic approach. Healthcare focusing more on selling and producing more medical products vs truly understanding the needs of the patients. The research at the time was also set up similarly. For this reason, she decided to step away from research and go deeper into the fields psychology, sociology, medicine and health via non-profit work, primary care nutrition consulting, and international cultural and language immersion. Countries that she worked and traveled in were Curacao, The Netherlands, Germany and Dubai. This experience together with her own struggles in nutrition and health, led her to have the desire to provide and support services that go deeper into the root cause of health (and our healthcare system) and therefore became a Licensed Nutritionist & Yoga instructor specializing in Functional & Integrative Medicine in combination with Mindfulness and Embodiment.
Melanie became a freelancer within the field of wellness and health in 2016 where she was known as My Body, My Soul. Having exposure with innovative wellness and health concepts during her Registered Dietitian training- companies/organizations such as NASA, Ali Miller RD/Naturally Nourished (Functional Nutrition), Hippo Kitchen (Food-on-wheels for cancer patients) – inspired her to take the steps towards creating an innovative business and concept of her own.
Melanie started her work within wellness and health in Houston, Texas creating health programs for students ranging in age between 8-9 to 20-21. Furthermore, for individual clients she combined nutrition consulting with private cheffing. As this work was continuing, Melanie was also deepening her work within biohacking through her own health journey, specifically with tools and protocols from embodiment, mindfulness, sensory nerve rehabilitation and energy restoration. Examples are for instance, more main stream practices such as yoga, dancing, journaling, meditations, breathwork and nutrition, but also less conventional practices such hot/cold therapy, light therapy.
After her last 10 years of experience within wellness and health, Melanie has now founded her own methodology housed by Integrative Health Guide called “The Body Quotient Method”. She believes we have a new form of knowledge known as the Body Quotient which combines skills from intuition and interoception to integrate medical and health advice in a personalized way. For this reason, she has gone also back to school to do her Masters and bring research to this method. (To hear more about Melanie’s professional journey head to Experiential Research.
